Is the heat of summer getting you down? Doesn’t it just seem to saturate everything, giving you no respite? Even sleeping is hard – you toss and turn, unable to cool down until even your mattress appears to feel like a blast furnace.
What’s the solution? Sleeping with the air conditioner on is expensive and not at all good for you or the environment. Sleeping with a fan on will help but is not going to score you any health points either.
What are the alternatives, then? A cooling mattress topper ticks all the boxes when it comes to helping you cool off at night. A mattress topper designed to keep you cool is an energy-efficient way to ensure that your bed doesn’t overheat.
But which one do you choose? Sit back and relax – we’ve done all the hard work for you. We’ve waded through all options out there to make sure you find a great “cold” bed topper.
Benefits of Owning a Cooling Bed Pad
Stay Cool All Night
Assuming you find a good mattress pad, it will keep you cool all night. They are specially designed to disperse your body heat and improve the air circulation underneath your body. With a standard mattress, the radiant heat from your body builds up and is reflected back to you, leaving you feeling hot and sweaty. Your standard bed is built to optimize comfort and stability rather than to maximize ventilation.
By adding a mattress pad that is designed to optimize ventilation and heat dispersion, you are assured of a good night’s rest because your body feels cooler naturally. You don’t need to sleep with the air con or fan blasting away at night.
Reduce Electricity Costs
Because the air is allowed to circulate around your body, and the excess heat is pulled away from your body, you naturally feel cooler. This means that you may be able to get away with not using your fan or air conditioner.
And, in those instances when you still must use them, you can use a more energy-efficient setting because they won’t need to work quite as hard to cool you off.
It’s a win-win situation when you choose a mattress topper – you get to pay less on your electricity bill and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time. And all without having to cut back on luxuries or scrimping and saving!
Cheaper Than a New Mattress
Is your mattress not quite as comfortable as it should be? Ideally, you’d want to replace it entirely, but that’s not always a practical or financially viable option either. And, it is quite wasteful from an environmental standpoint as well.
A mattress topper can completely transform your bed. It adds an extra layer of comfort both in terms of improved temperature control and in terms of padding.
And, even better still, mattress pads cost nearly as much as a new bed would. You can sleep better tonight without having to pay out loads of money.
Reduced Pressure Points
Do you have to change positions often at night? Do you wake up in pain because the pressure of laying on a particular body part becomes too much to take? Adding a comfortable bed pad helps to reduce the pain by adding extra padding.
And, you can be covered no matter where the pain is. Whether you are a side sleeper or someone that prefers to sleep on your back, the “cold” bed pad will provide comfort and ease your pain.
It’s like resting on a cloud – it doesn’t matter what position you are in, you’ll be a lot more comfortable.

Are Bed Toppers & Pads Different?
The short answer is yes.
While both perform the same basic function – to increase your comfort while you sleep, the mattress topper is usually thicker and plusher and may be filled with a variety of materials, such as down or fiber-fill. It will normally sit on the top of your mattress and may be strapped down to keep it in place. They look distinctly different to your bed.
Mattress pads are thinner and more streamlined. They usually come with a cover or fitted sheet that allows them to be placed over the mattress. They are not as thick and will often be made out of some gel-infused foam.
How to Choose Right Cooling Mattress Pad
What Material Is Best?
Memory foam mattress pads can add a layer of comfort, but you need to be careful when it comes to the density of the foam. A two-inch density foam is the minimum that you will need to add any real level of comfort. If you are on the heavier side, though, you would need to look for a higher-density foam of about three- to four-inches.
This style has the advantage that it can mold to the shape of your body and bounce back into shape afterward. If you have a partner that moves a lot in their sleep, memory foam is good because it reduces the motion transfer on your side of the bed.
That said, it can be slightly warm to sleep on so it may be better to have it as an underlayer with something else over the top.
With gel-infused foam bed toppers, you are getting the best of both worlds. This style provides excellent support, and the gel helps to produce a cooling effect when you sleep. There are two different types of gel used – thermally conducted gel and phase-changing gel. The former feels cool to the touch, and the latter reacts at specific temperatures to regulate the temperature.
Either way, they both work similarly. The gel is interspersed in the topper and helps to create a more open structure and spaces from within. This allows for more to heat to be removed from the body. The gel also helps to dissipate the heat.
The disadvantage with the gel is that, in some cases, it can clump and you can get hot spots forming on the mattress. This type is also more expensive than plain memory foam.
The advantages of a bamboo fiber cooling topper are great. Bamboo is fast-growing and produces natural fibers that are strong, breathable and hypo-allergenic. The benefit of using it in a chill pad for your bed is that it imparts those same characteristics and also feels smooth and silky to the touch.
The fabric made from bamboo fiber breathes well, allows for better ventilation and temperature control and is durable and easy to care for. When it comes to a natural option, bamboo is one of the best – as a filler, it can be as soft as down and have the added advantage of not feeling prickly.
A latex cooling pad is a good option if you are looking for firmer support. Latex breathes better than memory foam and so is not as warm to sleep on. It also will not cave in, but it can still get warm.
When it comes to latex, the thickness doesn’t make too much of a difference to the feel – thicker options are chosen as a way of adding height rather than for additional comfort. What you do need to do is to ensure that you select the right thickness – you need enough of a cushion between you and your bed to provide adequate cooling properties.
Latex is a better option if you are larger and require more support.
The thickness of the actual cooling pad or topper that you choose does depend on the material that it is made out of. The amount of natural give in the material and the amount of support needed should be your guide here.
Generally speaking, though, the thicker the product is, the higher the level of comfort. A three-inch thick layer should provide more support than a two-inch thick one, for example.
But the thickness needs to be considered in conjunction with the density of the material as well. A two-inch thick memory foam pad with a 4-pound density, for example, will provide more support than a three-inch thick one with a 2-pound density.
If you like to be able to sink into your bed, you will look for a topper that is more plush and luxurious. Keep in mind though, that the deeper you sink in the pad, the more air circulation around your body becomes restricted.
Firmness is another crucial aspect to consider when selecting a great mattress pad. Lower-density and plusher toppers tend to be a lot less firm and so might not be the best option for you health-wise.
You need to consider how much support you would like to have and that, sometimes, having too much give in the material can cause problems over the long term.
It is better to choose a firm cooling mattress pad that offers excellent support than a soft and squishy model. While the latter may feel more comfortable, it will not be able to distribute your weight correctly while you sleep.
Take your actual bed, for example – it probably has springs in it to help support your body weight. Over that, there is probably a layer of memory foam to make it more comfortable. The combination of the two is designed to provide the firmness you need to support your body when sleeping.
If you’re overweight, we recommend buying a mattress that’s designed specifically to support the extra weight. Learn more here.
Of course, there is such a thing as a topper being too firm. And, let’s be honest here, we do like our comfort as well – otherwise, we’d all just sleep on the floor.
Comfort can be enhanced by the right cooling mattress pad without sacrificing support so, if your bed feels too hard, you can improve your comfort levels without changing your bed entirely. The choice of material again depends on what is more important to you – comfort or support.
It’s also important to consider your comfort in terms of temperature when you are sleeping as well. If you live in a warmer climate, it makes sense to get a cool mattress pad that allows the air to circulate around you when you are sleeping.
A naturally breathable fiber, like cotton, as the cover and filling will be a lot cooler than one that is made of a synthetically produced fiber, like polyester.
Generally speaking, the higher the density of the material using in making your cool mattress topper, the more support you get. If you get a higher density material, you can also usually get away with a lower thickness.
That said, the higher the density, the firmer the support will be and the less space there is for the air to circulate. If you are looking at a high-density foam pad, it is best to look at something that is gel-infused or that features larger cell pockets to improve the air circulation and help keep you cooler.
If you are looking more at comfort over firmness, a lower density product will usually be a better bet. The lower the density, the softer the pad will be. It pays to pair the correct density with the mattress that you have – if you have a very firm mattress, you can complement it with a lower density material for added comfort.
The next consideration when choosing the cooling gel mattress pad is how much of your bed it will cover. It can be tempting to look for the cheapest option and just stick to that. That can end up costing you in the long run, though.
You need to take out your tape measure and measure your bed before you even start looking. Now, I realize that you bought a specific size, like “Queen” or “Double” but these dimensions can mean different things to different suppliers.
Save yourself a lot of heartaches and check the measurements before you order anything. How is the cover you are considering going to be attached to your bed? Does it just fit on top or is it strapped down?
You need to take measurements of the height, width, and length of your bed, especially if you are choosing an item that comes with a fitted sheet. If it doesn’t come with a fitted sheet or straps, you need to ensure that you will be able to fit a sheet over the top of it when it is in place.
We all want a good deal, and we all love a bargain. Before you get too carried away looking for the cheapest option, though, do spare some thought to the value of the deal that you are getting.
Do you want to pay $20 for something only to have to replace it in a year or two? Or is it better value to pay $50 for a pad that will last 5 years?
When considering value for money, it’s important to remember that you are going to be using this every day. Choose a product that suits you and your lifestyle. Consider how long you will be using it for and that you will be using it for different seasons.
Choosing that polyester cover may be excellent for winter when it is colder, but how will it work out in the summer? Are you going to have to buy another to use in summer?
As with everything, it pays to check out the reviews of the bed pad that actual people have left. And don’t just rely on the supplier’s website or storefront, dig a little deeper before ordering. There are a lot of products that sound great on paper but that don’t work out so well in reality.
By checking reviews upfront, you can see whether or not the product does match the claims made about it. If you are using a site like Amazon or eBay, look at what previous purchasers have said – look at the negative reviews as well as the positive ones.
If you are ordering directly, run a quick internet search for reviews on the product and company. You want a product that delivers what is promised and a company that will provide superb service.
There are bound to be some missteps for every company but how they deal with them is the real measure of how seriously they take their customer service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Can I Keep My Mattress Cooler During the Summer?
There is a saying that goes, “There is nothing cooler than the other side of the pillow.” If only flipping your mattress was as easy as flipping over your pillow. Fortunately, there are a lot of things that you can do to keep your mattress cool in summer.
The most obvious choice is to look for mattress pads that keep you cool as well, but you can also influence how cool your mattress is by choosing the right bedding.
Using natural fiber bedding can help your mattress to breathe better and to prevent heat being trapped in it. Airing out your bed every day can also help to reduce levels of humidity in the mattress itself and prove very useful in keep it cooler.
Will My Topper Last Long?
I am going to sound like a broken record here but how long it lasts will depend on what material you choose and how well the topper has been made. The cheaper the topper is, the less durable it is likely to be.
That said, you can also improve the lifespan by taking proper care of it. Check the care instructions before you start to use it so that you know how to clean it. Putting a cover over the top can also extend its lifespan because then it doesn’t get as dirty or need cleaning quite as often.
How Important Are Bed Sheets for Staying Cool?
Bed sheets are essential for staying cool – they provide a layer of protection between you and the cover and can also be used in place of a comforter or duvet when the weather is too warm to use a thicker covering.
Sheets also make a huge difference when it comes to cooling your skin. The more natural the fibers of the sheets, the cooler your body will stay. For example, cotton or silk sheets are light and allow more air to circulate around your body than satin sheets would.
Isn't Memory Foam Going to be too Hot?
It is good for comfort but not so great when it comes to air circulation. You sink into it slightly, and it doesn’t facilitate proper ventilation.
That said, advances have been made that can help reduce the problem – the foam can be infused with gel or have larger cells in it to accommodate better air flow.
You could also use something over the top of the layer to act as a barrier between it and your body to reduce the heat-retention issue.
The best way to stay cool at night is to ensure that you have proper ventilation around your body. This means giving your whole body a chance to breathe. If the heat is drawn away from your body and dissipated, you will stay cooler.
Whenever there is a barrier to this process, you will naturally feel warmer. You can reduce this effect by choosing the right topper for you. Cooling pads are designed to help improve air circulation around your body.
Traditionally, memory foam adds a great deal of comfort, but inadequate ventilation and this puts some people off it. However, this problem has now been addressed with the introduction of new structural designs and gels that help to reduce heat retention.
As you have seen in this article, there are also other alternatives such as bamboo and latex. With the new cooling properties of these products, you can enjoy a better night’s sleep and still yourself a lot of money. There is no reason to swelter through the summer nights anymore.
